Isabelle Dutartre
It is my passion! I have been a winemaker for more than 25 years and 1789 is my first label and my fourth child.
The backbone of my story is that I left my friends, my culture and my country to pursue a life in Oregon based around Pinot Noir.
My French is better than my English!

Rosé of Pinot Noir
Nick and Sheila Nicholas
For the evenings we can sit on the deck, drink a glass of our own wine and watch the grapes grow.
Each of our wines are from the vineyard we plant and farm ourselves -- so we are 100% estate. It also allows us the wonderful opportunity to learn our vineyard’s special characteristics row by row and block by block. Taste the Chehalem Mountains terroir here!
We’ll be married 28 years in May! Driving the tractor is Nick’s fifth career move, and making wine is Sheila’s fourth. No more changes!

Wine turns science into art. I love
wine and I love my job. (Not many people can say the latter.)
Ancient Cellars gives my brother and me an opportunity to work together, exploring our love of wine and utilizing our expertise – his palate and business sense, and my knowledge of agriculture and science.

Alfredo and Laurine Apolloni
Well, it is not a get rich quick scheme, although over the past year the grapes have definitely performed better than the market. The real answer is that I grew up working in vineyards and there is nothing more rewarding than starting the year with a bare canopy and ending with fantastic grapes which will produce great wine for many to share.
Delicious wines made by an Italian for you to enjoy - what more could you ask for?
We have trained our vineyard sheep to be

Passion for Pinot! Yes, this phrase has been used in the past, but truly describes why we do this.
Since 2001, our mission has been to create the highest quality pinot possible, focusing on Estate-grown fruit. We are a boutique producer and strive to provide our clients with great wines and a great experience!
Dave, a city-guy from birth, and Mary, a farm-girl from way back, continue to operate ArborBrook Vineyards, when our 7-year-old daughter, Sydney, will let us. While we always planned on her taking over the operation at some point, we are a little surprised at how early she’s decided she can run things!

First - we are wine geeks at heart, then we outgrew the garage and finally, we just can’t drink all this wine ourselves!
We truly love Oregon and the Northwest and we want to make wines that reflect the uniqueness of the place we call home. To this end, we have selected small family vineyards to work with, where we know the person tending the vineyard is intimately familiar with the soil, the plants and caring for the vines.
I started fermenting things only because I had to give a speech on a “hobby” in a communications class in college. After giving the speech, I kept the borrowed equipment and kept right on brewing beer! (Beer is obviously a “gateway” fermentation beverage)!

As much as I love engineering, my passion was to take those skill sets and design something just as unique in the form of wine.

We are a winemaker and an artist, growing and producing what we love to eat and drink.
We moved to Oregon from Napa and bought some property in the Willamette Valley on which we plan to plant a vineyard. This Oregon adventure is inspired by our desire to grow grapes, make wine, and to have the space for all of Clare’s animals and Brian’s wacky projects.
We have 150 chickens, three cows, two working draft horses, 6-9 pigs a year, 4 goats, a guard lama named Edward and one very spoiled hound dog.

Athena Pappas and Stewart Boedecker
Winemaking is intellectual, sensual and primal. It is also completely immersive, private, personal and yet social and hedonistic.
We’ve stepped back in time to a simpler world. We rely on smells, flavors and colors. Science backs us up, as do friends. Aching muscles and 3 am wake-ups make us feel alive and honestly making wine together - proves we are.
We are very unsurprising. We came into the biz with no money, no connections or parental royalty. We work days, evenings, and weekends and refuse to spin a tale to fit the latest marketing trend. We love winemaking, wine, food, and learning about each other and ourselves.

Raised as a Catholic boy, I guess my options were to make wine or bless it. As I’m a tad bit of a naughty lad… I left the frock behind in search of grapes.
Emotionally finished with the large commercially–corporate size wine production business, I focused my winemaking
passion towards my own artisan, hand crafted wines and B.S.
Left behind my life in New Zealand (land of sheep, rain, rivers and mountains) and landed in the Willamette Valley, land of… Oop’s – bugger!

I love making well-crafted, fine wines – from driving a backhoe and planting a new block in the vineyard to rotating barrels in the winery.
In 1979, I came out from the East coast to visit my old army buddy Nick. No ordinary Nick, though — this is Nick Peirano, the man behind Nick’s Italian Café in McMinnville. Nick introduced me to a few of his good friends — like David Adelsheim, Dick Erath, Myron Redford, Dick Ponzi, and David Lett. Every time I’d visit Nick, there’d be these great winemakers, there’d be dancing on the counters, there’d be food and wine and frolicking, and I thought this is how Oregon was all the time. So I moved. Eventually, planting Russell-Grooters Vineyard on Savannah Ridge.

2007 Willamette Valley Satori Springs Pinot Gris
Chris and Susanne Carlberg
Farming and working the vineyard connects me to the earth, which is a great joy. I love the music of hard work. I believe in contemplative living and everything I do in winegrowing has its origins there.
After college I eventually wound up back on the family farm - a teacher, struggling to make ends meet and keep the beloved farm afloat. At 51, I reluctantly followed the advice of an in-law (and successful winemaker) and started a two-acre vineyard. Nine years later, I was hooked. After six vintages of having other people “manufacture” my grapes into wine, I decided to give that a shot, too. At the age of 60 in 2007, I produced my first estate pinot noir and pinot gris. The vineyard was 10 years old.

Since our family lives on the land that is our vineyard, for us, it is all about the connection with the land and how our actions and intentions transcend into the wine. Oh, and we couldn’t afford great Pinot, so we decided to make it.
We feel that we truly embody the Indie ideal and spirit. We bought the bare land, have grafted and planted every vine on the property, have watched them grow from little sticks to a fully mature vineyard and make the wine at our winery on the property. We strive to create an honest and pure wine that reflects a time and place in each bottle we produce.
We have never seen the movie Sideways! We found our property on our first trip to Oregon by getting lost on an out of the way gravel road.

It was either slave away at our former careers or pursue our passions of wine, family, and running our own business. It was a close choice, but tasting through the barrels won us over.
Et Fille, which means “and daughter,” honors the hand-in-hand, father and daughter team that make these wines. We strive to bring the devotion and warmth from our relationship to each glass - from its endearing Pinot Noir fragrance to its long finish. We always deal in small lots of grapes (so that we can get just the clones we want), small fermentation lots (which gives us enhanced flexibility in our winemaking), and small European oak barrels (which can help in the wine’s complexity). We always sort, punch-down, and top-off by hand so that we are close to the wine every step along the way to the bottle.
The Et Fille logo - consisting of the two holding hands - was designed by Michael Dudok de Wit, whose short animated film, Father and Daughter, won the 2000 Academy Award. In another life, Howard designed a tool for animators, so we asked Michael to create the Et Fille symbol of hand crafted wines by a father-and-daughter team.

Rob Folin
Working with my family to create a product and lifestyle that we can both enjoy is at the core of what we do and why we do it. From the vineyard to the winery, we hope to provide a sustainable business for future generations.
Rob Folin graduated from Oregon State with a degree in fashion merchandising. After working retail, he returned to college to pursue his true passion: a career in winemaking. Along with his parents, Scott and Loraine, the trio mapped out a plan to turn their ranch in Southern Oregon into an Estate vineyard and winery. While Rob gained vital on the job training, the Folin’s converted their baby Kiwi/alfalfa farm into vineyards. Today Folin Vineyards in the Rogue Valley is home to 25 acres of Viognier, Tempranillo, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Mourvedre and Grenache grapes and is the location of our 10,000 square foot winery, opening to the public in the summer of 2009.
Oregon is not all about the pinot! Folin Cellars produces 100% estate grown warm climate varietals including Viognier, Tempranillo and Syrah. Try them!

2008 Willamette Valley Pinot Gris
Thane Hawkins
After working behind a computer for
most of my adult life, I can’t tell you how much pleasure I get from working out in the vineyard and making wine.
I became enraptured with the Willamette Valley wine culture soon after arriving in Oregon in 2002. I soon began making my own wine and trying to learn as much as possible about the industry and wine making. A fortuitous stint of unemployment allowed me to work harvest in 2006. In 2007, I began working with Chris Lubberstedt at Methven Family Vineyards. Prior to the ‘07 harvest, I asked Chris if he would be open to allowing me to produce a small commercial batch of my own wine. The rest, as they say, is history.
I have worked on four computer animated feature films. Ask me about them!

Kelley Fox
Three reasons: one, it is beautiful - even when it is not; two, I am true to myself doing this; and three, perhaps I am being punished for abusing power in a past life (joking).
I have been a full-time Oregon winemaker for almost 10 years and I want to have more connection with the people who drink the wine I make. A lot more. Because really, it’s not about the winemaker – it’s about the people enjoying the wine. What I love most about Pinot is its transparency. I prefer authenticity and even grit to armchair idealism. Pinot does this. There is something so real about it, for the better or the worse.

After working for years in high
technology, mostly sitting behind a computer, I wanted to do something that kept me active and moving. Growing wine grapes and making wine has certainly provided me lots of activity and I’ve found a career that demands the most from my full range of talents.
We planted Pinot Noir wine grapes on our family farm in 2004 and started our winery operations in 2006 after completing our education in viticulture and enology from the Chemeketa Community College program in Salem.
Starting a wine business like we have has taken an incredible amount of resources that I never would have imagined before we got started. We have relied greatly on friends and family and others in the business for guidance and help in getting our business off of the ground.

2006 Ribbon Ridge Dewey Kelly Pinot Noir
Oregon Dewey Kelly Early Muscat
Dewey and Robin Kelly
If I had a nickel for every time a friend, relative, or accountant asked me that, I could retire. But the simple answer is we do it because we love it, are passionate about it, and would probably do it even if we had all of those nickels.
We are both food people (I was and Robin still is a professional chef) and our love of wine evolved through pairing wine with food. As a result, we tend to make wines that pair well with food. Because if you aren’t eating food with your wine, you might as well drink grappa.
We purchased the land for our vineyard on Ribbon Ridge in 1978, at a time when there were few, if any, vineyards developed in what are now the Ribbon Ridge and Yamhill-Carlton AVAs. It took us 25 years to realize the dream of producing our first pinot noir but we are pretty happy with the decision we made back in 1978.

To add as much sensuality to our lives as possible.
We are white collar migrant workers,
who’ve lived in a bunch of places just to make a living. We quit our corporate jobs, sold everything we own, and drove ourselves to Oregon to build an authentic family vineyard and winery experience for ourselves and our young children. We hand craft wines from varietals that love to live in Oregon as much as we do.
We believe that wines should be distinctive and reflect the character of the winemaker. We are not crafting to anyone else’s standards. If no one buys these wines, we’ll drink happily for eight years.

Pinot Noir. The color of the grapes in the vineyard as they ripen, the smell as they ferment and then age in oak barrels and ultimately the taste in the glass. When the wine gods smile upon you and you get it right, there is nothing quite like it in the world.
There was a girl, a near perfect glass of Pinot, a career change, a bit of education, a quest for the perfect dirt, and then trials and tribulations interspersed with moments of pure joy. And therein lies a number of tales.

It needed to be done! Some fantastic Zinfandel and Primitivo is grown in small blocks in but a select few of Washington’s finest vineyards.
First, some degrees in Horticulture and Mining Engineering, followed by a career as a consulting Environmental Engineer. Simple. I love wine and everything about the process of creating it. Making wine is an art and a science that’s very closely tied with the seasons of the earth. Producing a wine that puts a smile on people’s faces when they try it lets me know that I’ve made the right career decision.
A vacation from the east-coast to attend a wedding in Amity, Oregon turned into a dream to start a wine business to make world-class Pinot Noir. After getting married in 2000, we decided to take the plunge, for better or for worse, and to pursue our dream, moving from Virginia to Oregon, all in the name of Pinot. “WildAire” comes from Matthew’s mother’s estate in Roanoke, Virginia. The name was carved into a granite fireplace of an old house on McAffee’s Knob.
I’m a Capricorn (born on Christmas Day). My turn-ons are: my wife, wine, guitar, cheesy things, beer, Jameson’s and growing things. My turn-offs are: people that don’t like all these same things. You gotta have standards.
